The legends concerning
Emerald are vast and many are very interesting. According to Eastern
tradition if a serpent fixes its eye upon an Emerald, it becomes blind.
It is said that it has the power, when mixed with water, to heal leprosy
and other diseases. According to legend, Emeralds strengthen the owner's
memory, quicken the intelligence and assist in predicting the future. It
is said that Cleopatra prized her emeralds more than any other gem. The
Moguls inscribed them with sacred text and wore them as talismans. The
edges of one talismanic emerald has an inscription in Persian "He who
possesses this charm shall enjoy the special protection of God."
Emerald is the anniversary gemstone for the 20th,
35th and 55th year of marriage. |
