MATCH-MAKING

Astrological consciousness about match-making is increasing day by day. More and more people are consulting astrologers and pundits for match-making. Usually it is done by referring to Melapak Chart given in any Panchang. The Melapak chart, on the horizontal side, gives the signs and stars of the boy and on the vertical side, the sign and stars of the girl. One has simply to see where the exact star (including its quarter/charan) of the boy meets the exact star (including the quarter/charan) of the girl in the Melapak Chart. At the junction is given a number which shows the number of matching gunas/ characteristics. Sometimes, below the number, another number is written which indicates the dosh / faults in match-making. Meaning of the number denoting dosh / fault is also given below the Melapak Chart in the Panchang. There are 36 gunas .

Let us take a sample case. Supposing Boy's star is Mrigsara, quarter / charan III, Moon sign Gemini, and Girl's star is Vishakha, quarter / charan IV, Moon sign Scorpio. From Melapak Chart we find that for the star Mrigsara there are two columns, showing (ii) and (ii), which means first two quarters of Mrigsara are in one column, and the next two quarters are in the next column. Since ours is Mrigsara III, we take the next column. Vertically, for the star Vishakha there are two rows, one showing (iii) and one (i), which shows that the first 3 quarters are in the first row and the last quarter in the next row. Ours is the Vishakha IV, we taken the next row. At the crossing point of this column and row, we find that figure 11 and below this another figure 6 are written. This shows that out of 36 gunas, 11 match, making it a mis-match and no. 6 is the dosha / fault. Seeing the definition of dosha below the Melapak chart, we find that it is for Nav Pancham dosha. This is explained in the end.

Let us now find out as to how this 11 gunas have arrived at. 36 gunas are assigned to various ways in which matching is done. These are :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sr. No.     Way of Matching     Gunas assigned
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1                 Varna                               1
2                 Vashya                            2
3                 Tara                                 3
4                 Yoni                                 4
5                 Grah maitri                      5
6                 Gan maitri                      6
7                 Bhakut                             7
8                 Nadi                                 8
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                 Total                 :                   36

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Varna : There are four types of Varnas, as under :

1. Kshatriya (Warrior)
2. Vaisya ( Businessman)
3 Shudra (Low class, scavengers, etc)
4. Bipra (Brahmin - pundit).

From time immemorial this classification of people has been made. Different signs assigned to these are :

Kshatriya 1, 5, 9
Vaisya 2, 6, 10
Shudra 3, 7, 11
Bipra 4, 8, 12

Since the different type of nature (mentality) for each Varna is indicated, this kind of matching shows agreement in the nature of two persons. In the order of status / rank, Bipra comes first, followed by Kshatriya, Vaisya and Shudra. In our sample case, sign of boy is Gemini (3), making him Shudra and sign of girl is Scorpio, making her Bipra. For finding out the no. of gunas for a particular match, refer to the following table :

Varn/Boy's                 K V S B
Girl's
K                                   1 0 0 1
V                                    1 1 0 1
S                                    1 1 1 1
B                                     0 0 0 1

For our case, Boy is Shudra and Girl Bipra; hence, 0 gunas match.

From the above table, it is clear that if both are from the same Varna, match is good and that Varna of boy should be higher than that of girl. If the boy is of lower status than that of girl, it is considered a mis-match.

II Vasya : means " to be under the influence of ". Following classification of sign is done in this regard :

Quadruped                 10 (First Half), 1, 5, 2 9 (Later Half)
Snake                           8
Two-Footed                 7, 3, 6, 9 (First Half)
Ants                               4
Watery animals          10 (Later Half), 11, 12

Use the following table to find out the no. of gunas for a particular match.

Boy/ Varn                         Q S TF A Watery
Girl
Q                                         2 1 1/2 1 2
S                                          1 2 0 1 1
TF                                         0 0 2 0 1
Ant                                         1 1 0 2 1
Watery                                   1 1 1 1 2

For our sample case, the boy is Gemini; hence Two-footed; Girl is Scorpio; hence, Snake. This combination of boy (Two-footed) and girl (Snake) gives 0 gunas as matching.

From the table, it is clear that if both are from same Varna, match is good.

III Tara : Count from Star of boy to the Star of girl. Divide by 9, remainder will be Tara of boy. Similarly, count from Star of girl to the Star of boy. Divide by 9, remainder will be Tara of girl.

For our case, count from Star of boy, that is, Mrigsara, taking this as 1, to the Star of girl, that is, Vishakha. It comes to 12. Divide by 9, the remainder is 3. This is Tara of boy. Count from Star of girl, that is, Vishakha, taking this as 1, to the Star of boy, that is, Mrigsara, It comes to 17. Divide by 9, the remainder is 8. This is Tara of girl. Tara No. 3, 5, 7 are bad, remaining are good. If both the Tara of boy and girl are good, it gives 3 points, if one good and one bad, it gives 1.5 points and if both bad, it gives 0 points.

Based on the above, following table can be used to find out the gunas for this :

Tara/Boy's Girl's         1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

1                                     3 3 1.5 3 1.5 3 1.5 3 3
2                                      3 3 1.5 3 1.5 3 1.5 3 3
3                                      1.5 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 1.5
4                                        3 3 1,5 3 1,5 3 1.5 3 3
5                                        1.5 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 1.5
6                                        3 3 1,5 3 1,5 3 1.5 3 3
7                                         1.5 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 0 1.5 1.5
8                                        3 3 1,5 3 1,5 3 1.5 3 3
0                                        3 3 1,5 3 1,5 3 1.5 3 3

As stated above, Boy's Tara is 3 and that of Girl is 8. This combination gives us 1.5 gunas as per above table.

IV. Yoni : This way of matching is done to find out the sexual compatibility of the boy and girl. Following table shows the yoni as per birth star :

For our example, Boy' star : Mrigsara, and Girl's Star : Vishakha.

The above quantification has been done on the basis of friendship and enmity between deferent yonis. A special mention is made of enemy yonis, which are given below :

Cow and Tiger are enemies.
Buffalo and Horse are enemies.
Dog and Dear are enemies.
Lion and Elephant are enemies.

Monkey and Ram are enemies.

Friends Yonis: Cow, buffalo, deer, etc. etc.
Neutral Yonis: Elephant & Cow, Cow & Cat, etc. etc.

5. Grah Maitri : means friendship between planets, i.e. Lords of signs of boy and girl. This is also done to find out the temperamental compatibility between the couple. This is done by matching the Lords of Signs (Moon) of Boy and Girl. Lord of sign of boy should be friendly with the Lord of sign of girl. Natural friendship between planets is given below :

Planet Friends Enemies Neutral

Sun Mon, Mars, Jup Ven, Sat Mer
Moon Sun, Mer - Ven, Sat, Mar, Jup

Mars Sun, Mon, Jup Mer Ven, Sat
Mer Sun, Ven Mon Jup, Sat, Mars
Jup Sun, Mon, Mar Ven, Mer Sat
Ven Mer, Sat Sun, Mon Jup, Mar
Sat Mer,Ven Sun, Mon, Mar Jup

If the Lords of Moon signs of boy and girl are enemies, there will be quarrels and disputes between the married couple.

Following table quantifies the matching gunas on the above basis :

Lord of
Sign Boy'sGirl's
Sun Mon Mar Mer Jup Ven Sat
Sun 5 5 5 4 5 0 0
Mon 5 5 4 1 4 1.5 1.5
Mar 5 4 5 1.5 5 3 1.5
Mer 4 1 1.5 5 1.5 5 4
Jup 5 4 5 1.5 5 1.5 3
Ven 0 1.5 3 5 1.5 5 5
Sat 0 1.5 1.5 4 3 5 5

For our example, Boy's Sign : Gemini, its Lord is Mercury, and Girl's sign : Scorpio, its Lord is Mars. According to above, Mer and Mar combination gets 1.5 gunas.

6. Gan : Classification of stars in this respect is given below :

Ashwini, Mrigsara, Punarvasu, Pushya Dev (God)
Hast, Swati, Anuradha, Sravana, Revti

Bharni, Rohini, Ardra, P & U Phalguni Nar (Human)
P Ashada, P & U Bhadrapad,

Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Rakshas
Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Moola, (Demon)
Dhanishtha, Shatbisha

Following table will give the matching points :

Gan Boy's Dev Nar Rakshas
Girl's
Dev 6 5 1
Nar 6 6 0
Rakshas 0 0 6

For our example, boy's star : Mrigsara; hence, Dev Gan, and girl's star : Vishakha; hence, Rakshas Gan. Matching point is 0.

If both are of Dev Gan, love and affection will prevail between them; if of Dev and Human Gan, some love will be there; if boy is of Human Gan and the Girl of Rakshas Gan, death is possible; If boy is of Dev Gan and girl of Rakshas, they will always be fighting.

7. Bhakut : If the signs of boy and girl are 6th and 8th to each other, it is said that death of either takes place. If the signs of boy and girl are 5th and 9th to each other, it is said that death of progeny takes place. If the signs of boy and girl are 2nd and 12th to each other, it is said that poverty is the fate of the couple. All these combinations come under Bhakut. Table in the next page quantifies the matching points :

For our example case, boy's sign is Gemini (3) and girl's sign is Scorpio (8). Matching these, we get 0 point.

U Ashada, Sravana, Revti

Following table will quantify the matching compatibility :

Nadi Boy's Adi Madhya Antya
Girl'
Adi 0 8 8
Madhya 8 0 8
Antya 8 8 0

For our example, boy's star : Mrigsara; hence, Madhya Nadi, and girl's star : Vishakha; hence, Antya. Matching point is 8.

The result of Adi and Adi is always opposition to each other, the result of Madhya and Madhya is death of wife after marriage, and the result of Antya and Antya is the death of husband after marriage. These combinations have been given 0 points above.

Thus, we get total of 1.5 points from Varna, 1.5 points from Tara, and 8 points from Nadi matching, making a total of 11. This is the number given in Melapak chart, as stated in the beginning of this.

Faults / Dosh

Below the Melapak Chart are given certain faults, which have already been considered, but which should be given more attention. These are numbered as under :

1 Gan Dosh (For a combination of Human & Rakshas Gan)
2 Enmity between yonis
3 Nadi Dosh
4 2nd/12th position of signs of Boy and Girl
5 5th/9th position of signs of Boy and Girl
6 6th/8th position of signs of Boy and Girl

Panchang also tells that where the fault/dosh is completely cancelled, a + sign has been given, and where there is a little dosh, a - sign is given. Also, if the star of the girl is before the star of boy, a 0 has been given, since this is also sometimes considered a dosh/fault.
